Activity Notes

Join us at the MMC for a talk & Q&A with the Eric Linxweiler, contributor of Mountaineering: Freedom of the Hills 10th edition and celebrate the impact that book has had on the outdoor community. Mountaineering: The Freedom of the Hills  is the most significant guidebook ever published. Born from the handwritten climbing tips of early volunteers of the Seattle-based Mountaineers organization, this fundamental how-to manual has inspired emerging climbers around the globe across nine editions for more than six decades. Mountaineers Books is proud to present the 10th edition of this master guide, commonly referred to as "Freedom." From planning a weekend backpacking trip to navigating the logistics of a months-long alpine expedition, from tying knots and hitches to essential belaying and rappelling techniques, from setting up camp in the wilderness to summiting glaciated peaks--this comprehensive textbook written by climbers for climbers covers it all. Eric Linxweiler joined The Mountaineers in 2001, enrolling in climbing classes and subsequently teaching field trips and mentor groups, also assisting climbing trips. When the organization moved to Magnuson Park and hired a new executive director, he served as Board president. Linxweiler also served as Vice President of Publishing and Branches before leading the effort for Freedom 10.
