Home of majestic mountain goats and ravenous chipmunks, Mt Ellinor is an easier, lower elevation peak with modest elevation gain. A good beginner climb, with a bit of snow and some rock scrambling. It's in the Olympic range near Puget Sound.

This peak is it fairly easy car to car in a day outing, and it's relatively close to Portland. The route ascends moderate snow slopes, which can be a nice glissade back down in early season. An excellent trip for beginning climbers to work on your snow technique.

Activity Notes

We will meet at the lower Mt. Ellinor trailhead at 7:00am and follow a hikers trail through beautiful older-growth forest to an open meadow at the base of the southeast chute. We will ascend through the chute to an elevation of ~5,700'. From there we will turn west to cross a basin, then climb the final slope to the summit. We should be back to the cars by late afternoon. This is a great post-BCEP climb and will give you an opportunity to practice ascending steepish snow, walking in balance, using crampons, and potentially doing a short glissade depending on conditions. There are also beautiful views from the summit!
