Rooster Rock is a well-known 180-foot pillar of Columbia River basalt located below the cliffs of Crown Point at the western end of Rooster Rock State Park. The rock was an ancient Indian place of worship and was originally called Woutoulat. This is probably the rock mentioned by Lewis & Clark as their camping place on November 2, 1805. According to Oregon Geographic Names, the modern name is of phallic significance.

Activity Notes

Team 07 SnakeDogs graduation rock climb! This will be fixed line prussiking up two pitches on the famous Rooster Rock with a full length 60m rappel back down to the ground.  If you are efficient, you may climb this route more than once. This is straightforward low 5th class rock scramble that can be done in your hiking/mountaineering boots, but you are welcome to use rock climbing shoes if you feel more secure with them.  You will need a locking carabiner and waist prussik to tie into the fixed lines, personal pro and locker, and helmet, harness, rappel device and autoblock with associated locking carabiners to perform this climb.  You will do a single strand rappel back down to the ground.
