This is a full day in the field practicing rock skills. Held at Horsethief Butte, you'll get the opportunity to apply the skills you learned indoors on actual rock. The day will include movement basics, belaying, rappelling, traversing, fixed line travel, and more.

Activity Notes

This is our time to climb outside!

Please bring all climbing equipment including harness, helmet, belay device and carabiner, all additional carabiners, slings and cordage. If in doubt, bring it.  You will not be able to participate without the required equipment! Optional equipment includes rock shoes and mechanical assist belay devices such as a Grigri.

STUNDENTS: Please be at the Crawford Oaks Trailhead by 8:00. This is a Washington State Park area and does require a parking pass, which can be purchased at the lot. From here we will need to do a short carpool to the Horsethief parking lot, which is about 0.8 miles west of Crawford Oaks.  This is essential as the Horsethief lot is very small.  If you show up expecting to park there you may be redirected which will lead to you missing some of the session.  One of the assistants will meet you there to walk you in to the area where we will be starting our day.

We will work on the following skills:

Review and practice belaying with a belay device (including proper use of belay signals)

Review and practice rappelling

Traverse a fixed line

Learn and practice basic rock climbing moves such as friction, mantles, jams, laybacks, edging, stemming

Optional belay from the top of the route,
