This is an B level Mazama Hike that occurs in a non-wilderness area. B level hikes are moderate or more challenging hikes with either less than 15 miles in distance with between 1,500 and 3,000 feet elevation gain or between 8 and 15 miles in distance with less than 1,500 feet of elevation gain.

Activity Notes

We will snowshoe the Flag Mountain Trail from Rhododendron, and return on the closed Still Creek Road back to the cars.

This is an exploratory hike for the leader; I have not hiked this trail in any season, although I will probably check out at least the access roads and trailhead on a trip to Hood prior to the hike.

If the snow conditions do not allow a snowshoe at this relatively low elevation (2000'-2500'), or if the trailhead is not accessible this time of year, we will find an alternate location such as Trillium Lake, Barlow Pass or the West Leg Road.

The  snowshoe as planned is a little more than 7 miles and 1600' of elevation gain, so it is an easy "B" hike without considering the added exertion of snowshoeing. If we have to choose an alternate location, the hike will be roughly the same difficulty level, plus or minus a mile or two and 500' of elevation.

We will meet at the MMC at 8:00 AM to carpool to the trailhead. Drivers should have a Sno-Park pass, and a car equipped with snow tires or have chains if necessary.

Those interested can stop on the return trip home for some hot chocolate or other warming beverage.
