Activity Notes

The Elevator Shaft is an unofficial historic trail that is a short direct route up to Multnomah Basin. Much of this area was damaged in the 2017 gorge fire, and has only recently reopened. On this hike, we will scramble 1000+ feet up a mossy boulder field, and then likely have some steep bushwacking  on unstable ground through prickly vegetation.  We will then check out Cougar Rock, the XMas Ornament trail,  Nesika Lodge, and Waespe Point. Our return will be via Franklin Ridge or the Multnomah Basin Road to the Larch Mountain Trail.

10-12 miles of hiking, 2500 ft of elevation gain, including some steep scrambling and bushwacking.

Winter gaiters and foot traction devices (like Microspikes or Yaktrax) are required for this hike.
