Activity Notes

The BCEP snow day field session is held in the gullies near Timberline Lodge. This day affords you the opportunity to practice snow skills such as movement on crampons, foot work techniques, moving in balance, ice ax technique, rope team travel, self-arrest, self-belay, as well as to observe snow anchors and avalanche awareness.

Schedule (all times and skills are subject to change based on conditions):

8:00- Meeting in parking lot for introduction and quick avalanche transceiver demo.

8:15- Hike to practice location.  Avy pit evaluation.

9:00- Ice ax holds and self belay.

9:15- Foot work practice: walking in balance, rest step, plunge step.  Advanced rest stepping (side step, duck step, American technique, German technique).

10:00- Rope team travel: Dividing the rope, prep for travel, navigating crevasse/switchbacks, passing pro/running belay, team arrest, quick belays,

11:30- Quick break while instructors set up anchors/Snickers bars

11:45- Try to break the anchors

12:30- Glissade instruction/practice

1:30- Self arrest demo and practice

3:00- Return to parking lot then head to the lodge

4:30-5:00- Snow camp demo behind the lodge (exact location TBD)
