Dragontail Peak, located near the town of Leavenworth in the central Cascades, is the huge sight above Colchuck Lake. Its northwest face is almost a mile wide and 3000 feet high. The South Route up this coveted peak, with some moderate glacier travel and 3rd class scrambling. Backcountry permits can be hard to get for this popular (and beautiful) area. Forest fires are common in this area in the summer - call the USFS before you leave town to be sure the trails are open.
