The Crevasse Rescue Skill Builder is designed to introduce climbers to the knowledge and skills that will allow them to participate in and lead a basic crevasse rescue scenario. The course consists of three parts: 1) an evening presentation over Zoom, 2) a field day at the MMC, and 3) a field day on Mt. Hood. At the end of the mini course climbers will have the basic knowledge and skills to assess a crevasse rescue situation, set an anchor in the snow, rig a haul system, and extract a fallen climber from a crevasse. Students who successfully complete the course will earn a Mazama's Crevasse Rescue badge.

This course does not cover protection systems in ice. 

Prerequisites:

  • Ability to tie basic climbing knots (e.g., rewoven figure eight, figure eight on a bight, alpine butterfly, clove hitch, and prusik hitch)
  • Knowledge of how to rope up for glacier travel
  • Have practiced self-arrest

We won't start accepting people until the week of March 2-8th.
