Mt. Hood map
The grant cycle for Mazama Research, Conservation, and Expedition grants
will open January 19, 2026.
The Mazamas has a long history of exploration, research, and conservation. Since our inception we have stated that one of our primary purposes was
"... to explore mountains, to disseminate authoritative and scientific information concerning them, and to encourage the preservation of forests and others features of mountains in their natural beauty.”
This mission of exploration, research, and conservation are now carried out partially through the distribution of grants to qualified individuals and institutions who share these goals.
Expedition Grant
The Mazama Bob Wilson Expedition Grant program provides substantial financial support to Mazama members organizing climbing expeditions in remote or high-altitude mountain regions worldwide. Established in honor of Robert A. Wilson, a distinguished Mazama member and accomplished expedition climber, the program offers significant support to Mazama members undertaking climbing expeditions in remote or high-altitude mountain regions worldwide
Named after Bob Wilson, whose climbing career included ascents of peaks like Annapurna 1, Gasherbrum 1, and Denali, this grant aims to inspire the next generation of expedition climbers. The program reflects Wilson's desire to share the joy of expedition climbing and ensures that dedicated Mazama members have opportunities to develop their skills and experiences in the world's most challenging mountain environments.
Conservation Grants
The Mazama Conservation Grant Program provides vital funding to protect and preserve the Pacific Northwest's mountain environments, wilderness areas, and other vulnerable landscapes. Since the programs inception, the program has awarded annual grants ranging from $500 to $2,500 to support various conservation initiatives, including wilderness protection, trail maintenance, environmental education, and forest preservation projects.
With a particular focus on Mt. Hood and surrounding regions, the program partners with both established environmental organizations and grassroots community groups. Recipients use these grants to conduct scientific research, maintain trails, educate youth about nature, advocate for wilderness protection, and monitor forest health. This sustained commitment to conservation helps ensure that the Pacific Northwest's ecosystems remain healthy.
Research Grants
The Mazama Research Grant Program funds scientific research that advances our understanding of mountain environments and human interactions with these landscapes. Since its inception, the program has awarded grants typically ranging from $750 to $2,500 to support research projects across diverse disciplines, including glaciology, ecology, geology, microbiology, and high-altitude medicine.
With a particular focus on Pacific Northwest mountain regions, the program enables researchers from universities and scientific institutions to conduct groundbreaking studies on topics ranging from climate change impacts on glaciers to the discovery of extremophile bacteria in volcanic environments. By supporting both established scientists and early-career researchers, the program has helped generate valuable scientific knowledge about mountain ecosystems, their geological features, and human relationships with these environments.
