Activity Notes

Team Hodge Podge,

Horsethief Butte reschedule is this Friday….can’t wait to see the t-shirt for this!!

We are pushing the regular HorseThief start time by one hour since it is a week day and we are the only team scheduled for HorseThief (the below times are different than the attached student notes and what is in the student handbook). Currently, there are 16 students and 13 instructors for this Friday.

MaryHill weather on Friday looks to be cloudy and cool, low 40s in the morning and 65 in the afternoon

Instructors: We will depart MMC 6:15am on Friday and we can organize ourselves into carpools for those of us returning Friday. Other than Teresa/Shane, let me know of any plan(s) to drive directly to HorseThief so we can keep track at MMC of who we should be expecting. There is no plan for a carpool spreadsheet as students/instructors should be able to coordinate in advance and at MMC. We may have to shuttle some cars at HorseThief depending on what we find when we arrive. HorseThief Butte requires a parking pass. The Discovery Pass station at HorseThief Butte parking lot was vandalized at last report so passes should be acquired in advance. Instructors will walk into the Butte NLT 8am.

Students: Plan to depart MMC 7:15am Friday. Students should arrive at MMC early to coordinate carpools among yourselves. Let Duncan know if you have a full carpool and driving directly to the trailhead. Suggested carpool driver donation $18/per rider, max $54 per vehicle. When you arrive at HorseThief Butte, at least one of our assistants will be at the HorseThief Butte parking area to direct car shuttling to overflow parking to the East, sign you in, answer any simple questions you might have. Make sure that you have your Discovery Pass permits on your dashboard. Please gear up including harnesses and helmets, take care of any last-minute issues, bio-breaks etc. before the 9:30 parking lot departure to hike into HorseThief. There is a single restroom at the parking lot trailhead, but not in the amphitheater.

Once you arrive at the amphitheater, you will receive specific directions for the day. Shane will start the Safety brief 10am in the Amphitheater.

Directions from Mazamas Mountaineering center to HorseThief Butte Parking area (1.5 hours, 90 miles): https://goo.gl/maps/t9SPgoMkFWK2

Start Mazamas, 527 SE 43rd Ave, Portland, OR 97215
Get on I-84 E/US-30 E from NE Cesar E Chavez Blvd/César E. Chávez Blvd, 5 min (1.4 mi)
Follow I-84 E to US-197 N/US-30 E The Dalles. Take exit 87 from I-84 E, 1h 17 min (81.8 mi)
Follow US-197 N and WA-14 E to your destination in Klickitat County, 8 min (6.3 mi)

We are combining students across three different teams, so students are going to hear various opinions on how to do things. As a student, if anything you hear sounds wrong or you are not comfortable with it, find one of your assistants and we will bring it up with Joe/Shane/Teresa and talk it over.

Don’t feel obligated to do anything that makes you feel uncomfortable. If you have any questions or concerns during the day, please find someone and let them know.

Please see the attachments for a general breakdown of the day.

End of Day: We will all gather in the amphitheater at 4:00 to debrief, answer questions, tell war stories etc. We will walk back to the parking lot as a group, sign out and head back to Portland. Talk with your carpool if you are open to stopping for food/drink on the way back to Portland.

If you have any questions, please let us know. Stop by Tuesday night before the BCEP lecture and introduce yourself to Team #11 (they sit in the middle back wall of the auditorium,). -Duncan/Scott
