Activity Notes
May 23 Update: We are cancelling the May 25th Mt Hood climb due to forecasted gale-force, summit wind gusts. This has been a rough climbing season. There is plenty of snow, but a climber’s ability to balance on crampons on an icy mountainside is challenging enough before adding 35+ mph wind gusts. As the climb date got closer, the weather models unfortunately converged on the summit, high-wind forecast. We could have waited until tomorrow to make the go/no-go decision, but our experience says that the weather (wind) will not get any better.
This is a Weekday climb with preference for recent BCEP graduates and climbers who are active Mazamas volunteers. Please update the Physical Activity section of your Mazamas profile to reflect your current activities over the past two months.
This is a Spring climb of the south side of Mt. Hood. The route from the Hogsback to the summit will be determined by the conditions of the day: Old Chute, the Pearly Gates or the Mazamas Chute. Be prepared for steep snow climbing. This can include free climbing or fixed line travel using crampons and ice ax.
