Activity Notes

Sunday, November 17 – Macks Canyon and White River Falls

With cold rain and snow descending on the mountains in November, it’s time to set out into the desert in search of adventure. Join AYM for a long day in the remote lower Deschutes canyon. We’ll make the long drive to the Macks Canyon Trailhead, north of Maupin and deep in the Deschutes canyon. Once we arrive at the trailhead, we’ll follow an abandoned rail line downstream into the canyon at least 4 miles until we find a good spot to stop and eat lunch. Upon our return, we’ll drive back towards Tygh Valley to stop at White River Falls on the way back. This spectacular waterfall is one of the best in the state and is always worth a stop for a quick hike. Plan on a long day in a remote and cold environment.

Please bring the Ten Essentials and prepare for almost any weather. We’ll hike rain or shine but this hike will be postponed in the event of dangerous weather. This hike includes scrambling in and out of side canyons, so please note that not all of it will be smooth hiking.

Hike: 10 miles

Elevation gain: 600 feet

Drivetime from Portland: 2 hours and 30 minutes each way (268 miles round-trip)

Please plan on paying your drivers at least $20 in gas money.

Hike will be limited to 8 participants for practical reasons. Meet at Gateway Transit Center at 6:50 AM, with a plan to leave at 7AM sharp.
