Mt. Lawson lies in the heart of Olympic National Park through wild old growth rain forest. It is an "island" peak set off from any ridge by surrounding rivers. It was named by the Seattle Press party, a group who spent 6 months exploring the Olympics in 1890 after answering the call for, "hardy citizens . . . to acquire fame by unveiling the mystery which wraps the land encircled by the snow capped Olympic range." Many peaks bear the name of prominent newspaper editors, e.g. Lawson of the Chicago Times.
