Activity Notes

In this out-and-back winter hike, we will climb Devil’s Peak to an old fire lookout from the Cool Creek trailhead between Zig Zag and Government Camp. This hike is great conditioning to get yourself in shape for winter sports and provides gorgeous views of Hood and Jefferson if we are lucky enough to have a break in the weather.

This is no walk in the park- we are looking at a very steep 3200 feet of vertical elevation gain in less than 4 miles, some of which may be through deep, powdery snow. Trekking poles, technical snowshoes and waterproof winter boots with high-quality gaiters are highly recommended. This hike requires a high level of physical fitness along with appropriate clothing and gear, those who are not prepared accordingly will be turned away at the leader’s discretion.

Minimum required gear includes a hiking backpack with plenty of water and food, head to toe rain gear, multiple layers of warm synthetic clothing (NO cotton), ten essentials, and sunglasses. Headlamps are also recommended. Cash for driver reimbursement and activity fee.

Fees: $2 for Mazamas members, $4 for non-members. 7.6 mi RT, 3200’ elevation gain. Drive: 100 mi RT. Wilderness area, group limited to 12. Meet at Gateway Transit Center, SE corner of garage at 7:30 AM. From there we will figure out carpools and aim to leave at 7:45 AM sharp.
