Broken Top is a heavily eroded volcano with spectacular views of the Three Sisters. It's a fairly easy ascent - a bit of easy snow and one very short section (10 feet) of 5.1 rock climbing.

Activity Notes

This is a one day climb of Broken Top. Some of us will be driving down and camping at the trailhead the day before, and getting an extra hour of sleep because the dreaded daylight saving time ends- lucky us! We may stop in Bend for some food/beverages en route.

If you can't make that but want to come, just get up real early on the 5th, and drive down and meet us at the trailhead. You'll have had an extra hour anyway, so no excuses.

The climb will start in the morning, time TBD but likely 7 or 8AM. We'll head up, likely using a fixed line, admire the summit view, come down via rappel, hike out and then drive back to Portland that evening. A multitude of factors could cause us to get back quite late, so don't make any evening plans.

Please review fixed line travel with a prusik and lobster claw (carabiner on a tether or leash) and rappelling and be ready to perform these tasks. Bring warm clothes, gloves, sturdy boots that are crampon compatible, gaiters, rain gear, and all of the climbing gear outlined. This is a late season climb so be prepared for the worst weather.
