Activity Notes

This is a qualifying hike for new hike leader Trixie.  Come join us!

We will start at the MMC parking lot to carpool to the trailhead.  If you choose to meet us at the trailhead, please let us know so we can find you.  This hike is in the Salmon-Huckleberry Wilderness area so we will be keeping the hike group size small to follow wilderness area guidelines and respect the solitude.

The Cool Creek Trail is an out and back 8 mile hike with a steep 3K+ ascent (similar to Dog Mountain in the Columbia Gorge).  The trail head starts near Rhododendron, Oregon. The trail offers generous views of Mount Hood, Mount Adams and Jefferson on a clear day. You’ll also find wild flowers and huckleberries depending on the season. Hikers are rewarded at the summit with an old fire lookout. You can sign the summit log book inside the fire lookout.

Bring a lunch to enjoy at the summit.  Hike is estimated to take about 6 hours. If time allows and everyone is interested, we can stop for food in town on the way back to the MMC.

Trekking poles will be useful. Be sure to pack plenty of water. One creek will be available 1.5 miles into the hike and there is a  spring near the summit however is most likely dry this time of year.
