Activity Notes

The road to Johnston Ridge may be closed but we can still get up there on foot! Hike among the “hummocks”, huge pieces of Mount St. Helens that slid off and were part of the massive 1980 landslide. This is a great hike though the blast zone of Mount St. Helens, with spectacular views of the mountain for most of the way! The trail traverses landslide debris from the eruption, open hillsides covered with trees downed all in the same direction, and some forest that is exactly 42 years old.

Plan for ~10 miles of hiking with 1800 feet of elevation gain. The trail has exposure both in terms of weather and trail. Parts of the trail are quite narrow so please consider trekking poles to help with those sections. We'll stop at Johnston Ridge for lunch before heading back down to complete the Hummocks Trail loop.

Adventurous Young Mazamas (AYM) offers activities targeted to those in their 20s, 30s, and anyone young at heart. All activities are open everyone, regardless of age.
