Activity Notes

Well spend a week, January 7-15, 2024, exploring Volcanoes National Park, one of the world's most fascinating biological landscapes in the most geographically isolated group of islands on the planet. We have reservations for eight nights right in the National Park at the Kilauea Military Camp, at 4,000 feet elevation, in two cabins featuring all the comforts of home. Our Outing itinerary will include six B level hikes plus a day to explore Hilo and the Hamakua Coast including Akaka Falls State Park.

While hiking, participants will have the opportunity to observe first-hand the flora and geological diversity of an island microcosm isolated from all continents for millions of years. We will explore an active volcanic area of cinder cones and lava tubes, as well as notice botanical effects on tropical and subtropical flora that must adjust to the irregular but often severe incursions of an active volcano.

Mazama member Outing cost is $900. (Non-member cost is $1,050.) Minimum number of participants, including Leader, is 12, maximum number is 16. Participants are responsible for meals, travel to and from Portland, and shared vehicle rental on the Big Island. Assistant Leader is Leigh Schwarz. For more information, contact Leader Jay Feldman, jayf1111@gmail.com.
