Activity Notes

Looking for a nice long hike in the desert? Join AYM on one of our favorite hikes, this long and mostly easy trek along the Deschutes River east of The Dalles. We'll take in spectacular views of the Deschutes River canyon, look for early spring flowers, and discuss the history of the railroad war in the early 20th Century that led to the construction of the rail line that is now a trail.

Plan on a long day as we will hike up and over Ferry Springs, then follow the river to a campsite at 6 miles from the trailhead. On the way back we'll follow the trail along the river as much as possible. We may stop for food in Hood River after the hike if there is interest.

  • Hike distance: 12 miles out and back
  • Elevation Gain: 1,000 feet
  • Drivetime from Portland: 90 minutes each way

Meet at Gateway Transit Center at 7:45 AM or at the Deschutes River State Park Trailhead at 9:30 AM. We'll meet in two locations - at Gateway and at the trailhead. If you plan on carpooling, meet at Gateway; otherwise, meet at the trailhead with plans to start as soon as possible.
