Commonly done during the Basic Climbing Education Program (BCEP), this hike is a good conditioner for climbing Mt. Hood as well as practicing rope team travel and crampon techniques.

Activity Notes

We will meet in the east parking lot (snow lot/overflow lot/climbers lot) at Timberline at 8:00 am. Location of Parking Lot with Trailhead nearby Distribute group gear.

Once everyone ready to go, walk over to the Wy East Lodge (where there are bathrooms) and check out the climber’s registry and forecast.

From there, follow climbers trail north up to Silcox Hut just to the east of the groomed ski area. This hike will be very similar to the beginning of a climb up Mt. Hood, with a 5 to 10 minute rest break each hour. Once past Silcox Hut, group can put on helmets and walk with ice axes practicing walking in balance, kicking steps, and using the rest step as we head up to Palmer Snowfield. At the top of Palmer Snowfield we put on crampons and practice rope travel and clipping through.

Return to trailhead via the climbers trail. Please come prepared for any type of weather.
