Activity Notes

Hey SnakeDoges,

Couldn't make it to last night's Tabor navigation sesh?  No worries you're about to get thrown in the deep end.  Today's hike is focused on one thing only: learning to navigate using your maps, compass, and GPS.  We will give you the tips and tricks on how to stay not lost, and if you find yourself lost (hint, you will...one day I promise), what can you do to find yourself on the map again?  Moreover, what can you best do to prepare yourself so you don't get lost.

Don't worry about bringing your climbing gear this time.  We want you to bring your map, prospectus, compass, a pencil to write with, and your GPS device if you have it.  Bring whatever else you need to stay comfortable for this activity.

Hamilton Island is a permanent orienteering course and there are many navigational choices to make.  You, the students, will be leading the group.  We will be changing out the leader from time to time, so each and every one of you will be forced to lead the party for some time.

We will meet at the trailhead at 9am.  There are no bathrooms as there, the closest are at the Chevron station nearby.  No parking permit is required but if you are coming from Oregon you will need to pay to cross over the Bridge of the Gods ($2 toll ea way).

As always, carpooling is recommended.
