Ingalls Peak

A fun, three pitch rock climb on good rock with a few 5.2-5.3 moves and some exposure. The approach takes you through an Alpine Larch forest, and features views of Mount Stuart. Expect snow in June and early July, and hot temperatures by August. Times: 3-4 hr hike to route, 3-5 hr climb to summit. A great first alpine rock climb.

At the end of this climb, we can use the nice creek at the trailhead to cool off your post climb beverages. While either of these routes may be done car to car in a day by fast teams, gorgeous backpack camps near Ingalls Lake are available and make for a relaxing weekend. We will camp by the Lake in anticipation our West-Ridge ascent of Stuart the next day.

Stuart (West Ridge)

The West Ridge route on Mount Stuart is Grade II, 5.4.

This athletic climb is largely scrambling on a huge granite massif. Fast efficient parties who travel light are favored. Route finding dilemmas tend to occur at Long John Tower, at exposed section of West Ridge Notch, and in descent (not staying right). Snow patches along the route should be utilized for drinking water.

Large rats, also known as, snafflehounds, inhabit the summit bivy area, so be careful about anything (including boots) with salt on it; they will try to eat it. Most of route is traveled unroped. The key to this climb is traveling light. Contact Leavenworth Ranger Station for updated backcountry regulations for the area.
