Bummed that our Intermediate Climbing School (ICS) isn’t running this year? We are too! But, thanks to the hard work and creativity of our ICS Committee, we’ve got two new Skill Builders that will take your rock climbing skills to the next level. The only pre-reqs you need are a top-rope belay card from a climbing gym or a Basic Climbing Education Program badge!

Introduction to Cragging

Come out and join the ICS committee as we introduce you to climbing at Smith Rock State Park!

This skill builder consists of 1 virtual meeting and 1 field session. It will touch on the following skills/topics:

  • Top rope belay including necessary knots
  • Demonstrating/discussing sport climbing anchors
  • Cleaning single pitch sport routes
  • Convert to lower
  • Crag etiquette
  • Assessing and choosing routes

Class includes one night of optional camping at Haystack Reservoir, located just north of the Park. Students and assistants will be grouped into 5 (3 students and 2 assistants) and will meet in the park at a predetermined location.

Climbing Techniques

Join the ICS committee as we review climbing techniques with Juan Rodriguez of Stoneworks Climbing Gym. Students will learn a variety of techniques that can be applied to both outdoor and indoor climbing, such as foot and hand placement, breathing, and process.

This Skill Builder consists of 1 virtual meeting and 1 field session.

Class includes one night of optional camping at Haystack Reservoir, located just north of the Park. There will be 8 students per day with two instructors. Participants will meet in the park at a predetermined location.
