Meet Our 2021 Summer Staff

Zane "Scooter" Davidson (he/his)

Co-Coordinator

 

Zane co-leads our Mazama Wild summer camps and programming. Coming from a background in education and non-profit operations, he has a Masters in biological anthropology and a history of teaching in all sorts of settings both indoors and outside.

With a professional background as an archaeologist, National Park ranger, environmental educator, college faculty, and non-profit program manager, his background is an ecological food web of its own. Outside of work Zane is an avid backpacker, cyclist, and traveler, usually with his human partner and dog-daughter Lily.

Monika "Ponderosa" Lockett (she/hers)

Co-Coordinator

 

Monika Lockett joined the Mazama team in 2021 and is one of our Mazama Wild Coordinators. Monika has spent the last 11 years working as an educator and leader at outdoor schools, parks and recreation programs, and museums. She was most recently the Education Manager at San Diego Children's Discovery Museum. Her background is in Anthropology, Recreation and Tourism Management, and Museum Studies.

Depending on the season, Monika enjoys hiking and exploring the PNW, rock climbing, camping, playing basketball and volleyball, paddle boarding, surfing, skiing, and snowshoeing in her free time.

Mazama Wild Day Camp Counselors

Amanda "Lilly Pad" Cox (she/hers)

Amanda was born in Mesa and raised in Tucson, Arizona. She graduated with her BA in Medical Anthropology from the University of Arizona. While in college she was a camp counselor for Camp Wildcat during the school year and has also served as a lifeguard at Camp Whispering Pines in Prescott, AZ. Amanda moved to Portland after college but ended up traveling around quite a bit for work. She then moved to Lesotho, Africa to serve in the Peace Corps as a Healthy Youth Advisor. All of that travel helped Amanda realize how much she loves the Pacific Northwest and can't see herself anywhere else as she applies for pediatric nurse practitioner programs. She loves the endless amount of outdoor activities and is excited to join Mazama Wild for her first summer!

Katie "Aspen" Coyne (she/hers)

Katie was born and raised in Vail, Colorado, where she grew up skiing, hiking, and camping with her family. Currently she is studying Environmental Studies at Lewis and Clark College. She loves going up to Mt. Hood to ski during the winter and going backpacking and exploring in the warmer months in Portland.

Hannah "Hamster" Crosfield (she/they)

Hannah was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. She recently completed her first year at PCC, studying to become an EMT. Hannah loves anything and everything that has to do with camp. Throughout high school she volunteered as a Student Leader for MESD Outdoor School. She enjoyed teaching sixth graders about animals, leading games, and leading songs around the campfire each night.

Kaylynn "Summit" Hanset (she/hers)

Kaylynn was born in Portland and raised in Washington state. She is passionate about working with youth and has done so in various settings for over 15 years. During the school year she works as security and a resource for students with the Vancouver School District. She loves backpacking, hiking, rockhounding and simply exploring and playing in nature. This will be her first year as a camp counselor and she is excited to learn and share her passion!

Sophia "Sunflower" Riccardi (she/hers)

Sophia was born and raised in Washington State. She grew up enjoying anything active whether it was going on bike rides, hikes or running with her friends and family on the forest lands in her hometown. She is currently attending the University of Portland where she is pursuing a career in Social Work. Her favorite hobbies are exploring new trails of Forest Park with friends, painting and volunteering for the nonprofit, Because People Matter. In high school, Sophia was a youth track and field coach and has always loved teaching and encouraging kids to be active with their minds and bodies. This is her first year with Mazama Wild and she can't wait for what the summer brings!

Anna "Mushroom" Salber (she/hers)

Anna grew up in Portland, and has lived in Oregon her whole life. She has her BA in Social Science from Oregon State University Cascades Campus in Bend, Oregon. Anna loves downhill skiing in the winter and hiking in the summers. She loves to share her passion for the outdoors with other people and has been working in outdoor education for the last 4 years. This is her first summer with Mazama Wild camp and she is super excited!

Jenna "Goose" Tracy (she/hers)

Jenna is a recent graduate of Sonoma State University’s School of Psychology. After the summer season closes, she will be moving to San Marcos to earn her Master’s in Social Work. She is excited to combine her knowledge of child development with her wilderness experience to create a fun-filled summer! This is Jenna’s first summer in the Pacific Northwest, so she is excited to see how it compares to the hot and dry summers of Northern California.

Abigail "Poppy" Westfall (she/hers)

Abby was born, raised, and educated in Los Angeles, California. After spending some time in Southern Oregon, Portland, and Los Angeles, she recently moved back to Portland to stay. When Abby is not camping, hiking, or backpacking, you might find her planning her next big national park trip with a cup of coffee in hand and her puppy nearby. During the school year, she works as a Kindergarten teacher. Abby is excited to return to Mazamas for another summer of fun and adventure!

Mazama Wild Camp Interns

Claire "Nettle" Beatty (she/hers)

Claire will be a Junior at Cleveland Highschool this fall. She enjoys being out in nature, working with kids at summer camps, and spending her winters up at the mountains snowboarding! Claire is super excited for her first year working at Mazama Wild Camp and what's to come.

Zane "Cascara" Freewyn (he/his)

Zane was born and raised in Portland, Oregon and grew up with water sports, biking all over the East coast, and hiking lots of Oregon. He recently graduated middle school.

Pollux "Amanita" Good

Pollux is about to venture into his first year of high school at the Metropolitan Learning Center. He loves going out on the water with paddle boards and kayaks and enjoys making things. This will be his first year at Mazamas.

Esme Illing (she/hers)

Esme is a rising sophomore at St. Mary’s Academy in downtown Portland. She love sports, biking, skiing, and overall just being outdoors. Esme has babysat for the past 3 summers and enjoys working with kids of all different ages! She is super excited to be a part of the Mazama Wild team this year and can’t wait to get started.

Phyo "Bunny" Theingi (she/hers)

Phyo Theingi was born and raised in Myanmar (Burma), located in Southeast Asia. She arrived in the U.S four and half years ago and is a senior year at Leodis V. McDaniel (Madison) High School, where she is in the biomed science program. Phyo is planning to go to college this upcoming fall and plans to study health & science with the goal to become a Pediatrician. She loves being in nature and enjoys spending time with kids, painting, playing games, and hiking. This will be her first year with Mazama Wild, and she is looking forward to having a lot of fun at summer camp and spending time together with kids and making new friends.
