Follow in the steps of John Muir as we take his ~220-mile namesake trail from the top of Mt. Whitney (14,494 ft.) to the Yosemite Valley, traversing the beautiful and scenic high Sierras. Depending on permits we may need to travel South to North, starting our journey a little south of Mt. Whitney at the Cottonwood trailhead. This would add ~18 miles to the hike. The actual days of the trip will depend on obtaining the proper permits and with the goal of a August to mid-September time frame.
Highlights of the trek include multiple >10,000 ft. passes, alpine lakes, jaw-dropping scenery, and the summit of Mt. Whitney. The five to six participants will need to be in good physical condition and have experience in at least one 100-mile (or greater) trek and at least one 12,000 ft peak or pass. We will be traveling light and fast, ~20 miles per day with elevation gains > 5000 ft. on some days and a majority of the hike taking place at over 8000 ft.
The total cost of the outing is TBD (depending on the number of participants) and includes permit fees, all lodging from and to Portland, resupply costs, and transportation from Yosemite Valley to the trailhead but does not include gas/carpool costs from Portland to Yosemite Valley. A $140 (member)/$280 (nonmember) deposit will be required upon acceptance. Contact the leader Gary Bishop (firstname.lastname@example.org) for more information.
This Outing was scheduled for 2021 and was canceled when the USFS closed all forests in California due to extreme fire danger. The team from 2021 will be accepted for the 2022 trip. Anyone else applying for the trip at this time will be considered for an alternate spot.
Due to the length of this trip and the distance from medical facilities, leaders and participants must be fully vaccinated against COVID to participate in the Outing. We will follow all Mazama COVID restrictions/protocols applicable at the time of the Outing. Leaders will adhere to all organization and local/regional COVID restrictions/protocols.
