DESCRIPTION:Mt Whittier is a scramble route in the Mount Margaret Backcoun
try\, a beautiful area just northeast of Mt St Helens that is the same as
it ever was\, as in it was left unaffected by the 1980 eruption. It is sai
 d by some to be a &quot\;dangerous&quot\; climb\, but that&#39\;s a matter
of perceptions. No Mazamas climber I&#39\;ve ever taken on this route has
been weirded out. We will do fine with climbing helmets and trekking pole
s\, but in an abundance of caution this climb will be canceled if conditio
ns are wet.\n\nWe are camping the nights before and after at Cowlitz Fall
s Campground SW of Randle WA. Why? This is a long climb\, and I don&#39\;t
like returning home around midnight. \n\nUpon acceptance to the climb\,
all climbers will be asked to contribute $16 toward camping. This will be
non-refundable unless the climb is canceled eight or more days in advance
\, which is unlikely. There will be a pre-climb meeting in camp at 19:00
Friday\, August 7. Our drive to the trailhead will begin at 06:00 Saturda
y\, August 8\, subject to the camp agreeing to open its gate at that hour.
It&#39\;s an 80 minute drive from the campground to Norway Pass. I sugge
st leaving Portland at 15:30 Friday\, August 7.\n\nI highly suggest carpoo
ling in 4-wheel drive\, higher clearance vehicles\; if you don&#39\;t have
one\, please don&#39\;t plan to drive solo. You may want to study our Fr
iday afternoon drive and our Saturday morning drive.\n\nI expect to begi
n climbing at 07:45. Our route will be a counter-clockwise loop that will
visit lakes--and peak huckleberries!--where we can refill water bottles wi
th quick filters\, before turning south on the mountaineers trail to Whitt
ier. The trail to the lakes is more overgrown each year\, so long pants ar
e advised. Our climb will ascend 3\,400&#39\; in 14.4 miles. Expect views
of Spirit Lake and Mt St Helens from close range\, and we may also be able
to spot Mt Hood\, Mt Adams\, and Mt Rainier.

DESCRIPTION:Prindle Mountain is part of a small network of informal trails
west of Archer Mountain. Since this area gets far less traffic than most
Gorge trails\, it will likely be overgrown in spots. Our hike is an out-an
d-back to a viewpoint that looks across to Multnomah Falls. Along the way\
, we&#39\;ll pass through a small grove of impressively large trees.\n\nWe
&#39\;ll cover about 7 miles with around 2100 ft of elevation gain. Almost
all of the gain is in the first 2.5 miles which makes for a good workout.
Note\, a short section of the trail has quite a bit of poison oak which o
n previous hikes has been easy to avoid with care.\n\nCarpools will depart
from the MMC at 7:30 am. We&#39\;ll hike at a brisk pace which should hav
 e us back by 1:30 pm.&nbsp\;

DESCRIPTION:This is certain to be an exceptional and comparatively unusua

catch the ferry across Lake Chelan to Lucerne. From there\, we will take
a bus to Holden Village\, where our human powered adventure will begin.
We will hike to our camp at Holden Lake.  On Saturday we will get an ear

DESCRIPTION:At 7960 feet\, Mount Daniel is the highest point in both King
County\, the county of Seattle\, and Kittitas County. It is situated in th
e heart of the Alpine Lakes Wilderness on the Cascade crest\, it&#39\;s wa
ters draining to the Cle Elum River on the east side and the Skykomish Riv
er to the west. Daniel is a complex glaciated massif with five main summit
s along its east-west trending spine. This is a nice intermediate level mo
untaineering trip to the Washington Cascades. It is challenging without be
ing overly difficult (class 2 and some 3) and excellent for recent BCEP gr
ads as well as any others. We will not need ropes (but a few spots are exp
osed). There will be a small snowfield\, so we will carry ice axes and cra
mpons. A photo collection from a previous Mazama trip can be viewed here:
 http://breivog.zenfolio.com /p518297215 Or http://breivog.zenfolio.com/p51
8297215/slideshow. We will take 3 days to do this. To avoid traffic we wil
l drive up early friday morning and hike into the base camp at lovely Pegg
y&#39\;s pond. The hike in is not too long or difficult\, taking about 4 h
ours. We will climb Saturday on a rocky ridge with perhaps a few easy snow

 hike out and drive home

with an access fee of $20 per vehicle. \n\nThe trailhead is about a 2.5-
hour drive from Portland and the final 12 miles are on a rough\, unpaved r

, two carpool drivers will be needed. If you are available to volunteer fo

k Meadows loop with the out-and-back trail to Hellroaring Viewpoint and Ic
eberg Lake. That part of the trail is steep\, rocky and faint. We&#39\;ll
also check out Gotchen Creek Meadow. Totals for the day will be about 11 m
iles and 3000 feet of elevation gain. Portions of the lower loop were affe
cted by the 2015 Cougar Creek fire and will be dusty and fully exposed to
the sun. \n\nGiven the length of the drive and the hike\, we&#39\;ll get

DESCRIPTION:This climb of the &#39\;Black Beast of the Cascades&#39\; will
leave from a convenient meeting place\, TBD\, at 7:00 am on Friday\, Augu

turday morning\, we&#39\;ll wake up early and hike east and gain the South
Ridge and ascend it to the summit pinnacle. After some route-finding alon
g the ridge\, we&#39\;ll come to the Great Traverse\, where we will likely
set up a fixed line in order to cross it. Then another fixed line up the
Bowling Alley to the false summit\, Then it&#39\;s a brief 3rd/4th class s
cramble to the summit. \n\nWe&#39\;ll celebrate like it&#39\;s halftime
and then begin the descent\, rappelling down the Bowling Alley\, recrossin
g the traverse and hiking down the South RIdge\, back to camp.\n\nAfter a
leisurely night in camp\, we&#39\;ll hike out on Sunday morning\, have ano

DESCRIPTION:Climb the highest peak in Idaho&#39\;s Sawtooth Wilderness Ar

, just below the saddle on the way to the climb route. I also reserved tw
o campsites at Point Campground\, which is 0.9 miles from our trailhead\,
for September 10-13. We will likely start our climb from there\, leaving o
ur vehicles to hold our sites\, as we will be camping at that high lake F
 riday\, September 11.\n\nHere is the plan:\n\nThursday\, September 10\, 20
26: Drive up to ten hours to Point Campground\, starting at 07:00 PDT. We
will have a mandatory pre-climb meeting in camp at 19:00 MDT. Friday\, Se
 ptember 11\, 2026: Backpack to unnamed lake at 9\,500&#39\;. Saturday\, S
eptember 12\, 2026: Climb Thompson Peak (10\,682&#39\;)\, return to our ca
mpsites\, and hike back to Point Campground. Sunday\, September 13\, 2026
: Drive home.\n\nThe total route is 14 miles\, and the elevation gained o
ver the two days will be 4\,200&#39\;.\n\nWe can only accommodate two vehi
cles in camp\, and the fee to each climber for the reserved campsites will
be $23. I will circulate a carpool spreadsheet once the climb team is set
\, and I will request payment for the campsites via Venmo.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:This is a great climb for anyone looking for a taste of techni

rrain. After enjoying the view from the summit\, we&rsquo\;ll take on the
traverse to Sacajawea which involves navigating along an exposed ridgeline
and around or over several gendarmes. Some sections are Class 3 with loos
e rock and exposure.&nbsp\;\n\nWednesday: We&rsquo\;ll pack up and hike to
the trailhead\, arriving early in the afternoon.\n\nTotals for the three
days will be around 22 miles and 6500 feet of gain.\n\nBefore applying\, p

DESCRIPTION:Goat Island Mountain (7218 feet)&nbsp\; is a very elongated hi
gh ridge on the northeastern flank of Mount Rainier\, above White River. I
t is called Goat &quot\;Island&quot\; because during the Little Ice Age\,
the mountain was surrounded by a much expanded Emmons Glacier on its north
\, and a much longer Frying Pan Glacier to its south. Today\, it is no lon
ger an island\, but it still feels like one\, being surrounded by the Sunr
ise area of Mount Rainier National Park on its north\, Mount Rainier and L
ittle Tahoma to the west\, and Meany Crest\, Banshee Peak\, and the Cowlit
z Chimneys to the south. All in all\, this is a moderate scramble to a mou
ntain that has wonderful views in all directions. While it is a straight f
orward climb technically and is of moderate physical difficulty\, this mou
ntain is probably not climbed very often. You should expect to have this s
ummit to yourself. (from Summit Post).

DESCRIPTION:Preference will be given to BCEP and ICS grads (or the equival
ent)\n\nSituated north of its bigger sibling\, Little Beacon Rock (LBR) is
a much smaller and older remnant of the volcanic age. Roughly 250&#39\; h
igh\, LBR&#39\;s south face is easily viewed from the road that runs below
its scree cone on the way to the upper campground. For the most part\, LB
R is an exfoliating moss-covered chunk of igneous rock\, however\, it has
graciously provided one relatively clean route up its face (Hadley Grove:
2 pitch 5.8 sport).\n\nThe views from the top of the formation provide a g
rand sweeping vista of the Columbia River Gorge and the trail off the top
wanders through a lush grove of Douglas firs and a quaint rock garden popu
lated by Pikas. Access is easy and convenient with ample parking and a sho
rt 10 min approach\, the descent is a pleasant walk-off reminiscent of the
many multi-pitch routes on the bigger Beacon Rock to the south.

DESCRIPTION:A lollipop loop taking in the many alpine lakes below Eagle Ca
p and the summit of Eagle Cap itself. Normally an A-level climb\, Eagle Ca
p is offered as a Q-level alpine hike when free of snow. The peak is reach
ed by the Eagle Cap Summit Trail. Participants should plan to bring a smal
l summit pack with them for summit day\, leaving larger packs behind at ca
mp. Expect to negotiate easy scrambling terrain up to YDS class 3 and spen
d multiple days in alpine terrain. Note that in contrast to climbs\, Q-lev
el hikes may not employ technical equipment (ropes\, axes\, crampons\, hel
mets). If conditions are unsafe with out them\, we will turn around.\n\nTh
e Wallowas are often compared to the Enchantments\, and its expansive gran
ite peaks have been used to stand in for the Sierras in movies. With a lit
tle luck\, we’ll enjoy some golden larches.\n\nWe will hike this loop as
a three-day backpack. Participants may wish to book a night at the Wallow
a Lake campground after the trip to separate the long day from the final (
long) hike out. Total stats are 32.7 miles and 6860&#39\; of gain. Day by
day breakdowns are available in the prospectus linked below.\n\nNote that
this time of year is more prone to storms moving through the mountains. I
have prepared backup prospectuses for the Golden Lakes in the Lake Chelan
Wilderness and for the Badger Creek Wilderness east of Mount Hood. Applica
nts to this activity should be committed to potentially pivoting to these
alternatives.\n\nThis activity is only open to Mazamas members.\n\nProspec

DESCRIPTION:Eagle Creek is historically the most famous trail on the Orego
n side of the Columbia Gorge. It has morphed somewhat since the 2017 fire
that bears its name\, but it&#39\;s forever compelling. The trail through&
nbsp\;the canyon is exposed in places\, and we won&#39\;t be taking side t
rails that could put party members at risk. We&#39\;ll hike about 12 miles
\, gaining just over 1\,000&#39\;. On our hike we will pass Punchbowl\, Lo
 owit\, Four Mile\, Wy&#39\;East\, Grand Union\, Tunnel\, and Twister Falls
\, then after lunch by the creek\, we will turn around and experience ever
ything again hiking back down the canyon. On this hike we usually hike bel
 ow 2.0 mph\, so it&#39\;s an all-day affair.&nbsp\;

DESCRIPTION:Larch Mountain from Multnomah Falls is a hike that starts out
 on Oregon&#39\;s most-hiked trail\, ascends Multnomah Creek\, and eventual
ly enters a subalpine zone where it could be much cooler. If the skies are
clear\, we&#39\;ll get a view of our surroundings from Sherrard Point.&nb
sp\;\n\nWe will hike approximately 14 miles\, gaining 4\,000&#39\; on Hall
oween\, back in time to trick-or-treat with the little ones in our lives.
Because we will likely arrive Multnomah Falls before they open the restroo
 ms\, we will make a rest stop at the Troutdale truck stop.&nbsp\;

DESCRIPTION:Why Learn? A bleeding injury can happen anywhere. We&#39\;ve
all seen it happen too often on the news or in everyday life. Life-threate
ning bleeding can happen in people injured in serious accidents or disaste
rs. The drive home after a climb can be the most dangerous part of a climb
. Instead of being a witness\, you can become an immediate responder beca
use you know how to STOP THE BLEED® (STB)\n\nWhat You&#39\;ll Gain from t
he Course The person next to a bleeding victim may very well be the one w
ho&#39\;s most likely to save him or her from bleeding to death. By learni
ng how to STOP THE BLEED®\, you&#39\;ll gain the ability to recognize lif
e-threatening bleeding and act quickly and effectively to control bleeding
once you learn three quick techniques. Take the STOP THE BLEED® training
course and become empowered to make a life-or-death difference when a ble
eding emergency happens.\n\nHow We Teach In this course there will be a f
ormal presentation at the MMC Holman auditorium by Mazamas volunteers who
are nationally qualified STB instructors followed by hands-on practice of
applying direct pressure\, packing a wound\, and using a tourniquet to st
op bleeding. With 3 quick actions\, you can be trained to save a life. Th
e #1 cause of preventable death after injury is bleeding.\n\nFor question
