No technical skills are needed for this easy scramble up one of Southern Oregon's significant high points. It has much the same vistas as it's neighbor Mt. Thielsen, but without the rock climbing on the summit pinnacle. There's a trail all the way to the top. This is a popular early season ascent for backcountry skiers.

Activity Notes

Approach and Climb:

Meet at the Thielsen Trailhead parking area at 8:00AM Sunday, Sept. 30. From there we will drive south 1 mile to the Highway 230 turn off. Turn west, then immediately take the Diamond lake turnoff (Road 6592) to the picnic area pointer, then turn right on road 4795 for 1.7 miles. Continue past Silent Creek and turn left on dirt road 300 for.4 mile to a parking area and the trailhead of Mt. Bailey (5250 ft elevation).

Take the trail 2.4 miles to the upper trailhead (accessabile via 4WD only). The trail continues through dense forest. With elevation, the trees thin out and views improve. Reach a ridgecrest and the 300 ft wide crater. Continue north through a saddle then steeply to the main summit at 8368. Great views of Thielsen, Diamond lake and Crater lake rim. Total gain, 3130 ft, distance, 9.8 miles round trip. Time, 6 hours. Return to cars by 3 PM and drive home.

Driving Directions:

Leave Friday evening or afternoon. From Portland, take I-5 south about 110 miles to just past Eugene. Take Highway 58 (Signed for Oakridge) east for 114 miles to highway 97. Take highway 97 south 17 miles to highway 138, signed for Crater Lake/Diamond Lake. Turn onto 138 and drive west about 17 miles to the 230 junction. Turn north on 138 for approximately 3 miles to the Mt. Thielsen trailhead (which is signed, and is located on the east side in a large paved parking area). Camp either in the parking lot (or adjacent forest), or at the nearby Diamond Lake campground (where the leader will be camped). There is no water at the trailhead, so either bring enough water, or drive down to the lake to get it. You can also eat at Diamond Lake resort (a mile north on 138, and a bit expensive, but good). The resort also has a motel with rooms to rent, if you want to stay there. To return to Portland, retrace the route.
