The BCEP snow day field session is held in the gullies near Timberline Lodge. This day affords you the opportunity to practice snow skills such as movement on crampons, rope team travel, ice axe techniques, moving in balance, self-arrest, self-belay, as well as to observe snow anchors.

Activity Notes

Hey Gang,

It's finally time to try out all that rented snow equipment!  You will need to rent crampons, boots to fit those crampons if you don't own them already, and an ice axe, in addition to bringing all of your required climbing equipment.  Also bring 3-AAA batteries for your snow transceiver.  This can get expensive and uncomfortable, so coordinate with your assistants first before renting because we have TONS of spare equipment we can likely loan you to use free of charge.

We will meet at the first Timberline parking lot to the right (overflow lot).  We will be doing our snow skills relatively close to the parking lot.  Bathrooms will be available during the day.  You must be ready to go with all your equipment and gear on by 8am sharp.  So plan to arrive no later than 7:30am.  We start early so you can practice you cramponing techniques before the snow warms.  Carpooling required there simply isn't enough room for all of us (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1_XbDR-5Rni42fupxs21c2Plmq0bwPFh7XhU2C7xE5U4/edit#gid=1265287749).

YOU MUST PURCHASE A SNO-PARK PERMIT FOR TIMBERLINE.  You can buy these at REI or at the gas stations in Sandy.

While is seems somewhat counterintuitive, it can get very hot and bright in the sun reflecting off the snow.  You MUST bring and wear sunscreen and sunglasses otherwise you'll fry and go blind.  Likewise, it cold also be a blizzardy out, so also be prepared to stand covered in snow all day long too.  Come dressed prepared to literally slide around in the snow with your whole body.  Because you will.  You will need a change of clothes so you aren't freezing in wet clothing once we are done.

You will be practicing the snow skills, such as how to walk in steep snow terrain, how to use crampons, how to properly use your ice axe, snow climbing techniques, and self arresting/glissading.  We will end will snow transceiver principles and use.

Afterwards we will retire to the Mazamas Lodge for dinner and snow camping (optional). They have hot showers and bathroom facilities available.  Bring overnight gear.  More on that in the separate Mazamas Lodge activity.
